Quite simply, it is a test of nerve and muscle function. There are two parts to the test. First
part also known as nerve conduction testing involves applying a small electrical impulse or
shock over the nerve, usually on the arm or leg. It may cause hand or foot to jump slightly. The resulting nerve signals are picked up by small disk electrodes attached to the skin and displayed on a computer screen for the doctor to interpret.
The second part of the test involves placing a very fine electrode into different muscles and
recording muscle electrical activity. The doctor watches muscle signal on the computer screen and listens to it over a loudspeaker.
Both parts of the test are analyzed by the doctor to determine if there is anything wrong with nerve or muscle function.
Patients present with varying symptoms including pain, numbness, tingling, cramping, and weakness. EMG testing checks for conditions involving the nerve, muscle and nerve-muscle junction. Some of the examples of conditions diagnosed by this test include:
Pinched nerve at wrist (ex. carpal tunnel syndrome)
Pinched nerve at elbow (ex. ulnar neuropathy at elbow)
Pinched nerve in neck or low back
Neuropathy (ex. Diabetes)
ALS
Muscle disease (ex. Polymositis)
Neuromuscular junction disorder (ex. Myasthenia Gravis)
The tests are performed entirely by our highly experienced board certified physicians. Prior to starting the test, our doctors will explain to you the nature of the test and what the test would be expected to show. Only after you provide consent will the test be started. If at any point you need to take a break or would like to discontinue testing, just let the doctor know. While the test can be uncomfortable, our patients generally tolerate it well and often tell us it was not as bad as they thought it would be.
There are no restrictions on food or drink, and you may take your normal medications.
It is important to keep the body warm before the exam. In cold weather, please dress warmly with gloves, hat and other protective clothing.
Please bathe or shower on the day of the examination. Please do not use any lotions or oils on your skin after doing so.
We accept most insurance plans. Each insurance plan is unique with respect to out of pocket expenses such as co-pay, co-insurance and deductible. Please contact your insurance company prior to your appointment to better understand what your financial obligation will be.
